Join us for a hands-on, heritage-inspired workshop where you’ll make a traditional besom broom in the unique setting of the Walled Garden, Helen’s Bay. Explore the folklore, tradition, and seasonal use surrounding this tool. ✨
Traditionally, besom brooms are normally used for sweeping autumn leaves from lawns and paths, but they are also steeped in folklore – from protective talismans, to symbols of witches, and Samhain celebrations.🧹🍁We think that they make charming rustic additions to your hearths or doorways—especially when adorned with a few twinkling lights for Halloween.” 🎃
The workshop is on Saturday 25 Oct 2025 10.00 – 16.00
During the workshop, you tutor, Heather McDermott, will guide you through the various practical processes including carving and whittling your own broom stick using locally foraged, sustainable, coppiced, birch and rowan….the use of axes, whittling tools and firepits… as well the application of traditional salves alleged said to protect against negative energies and spirits!👻💀
You’ll also have the opportunity to explore our Salley garden and learn about the sustainable qualities of willow and its use as a renewable material. Please dress appropriately for time spent outdoors.
