Join us at The Walled Garden, Helen’s Bay on Sunday 4th October, 10.00am–4.00pm for a unique Besom Broom Workshop. Discover traditional craft, seasonal folklore and the fascinating history behind this timeless garden tool.

The humble besom broom has been part of rural life for centuries. Traditionally gardeners used these handmade brooms to sweep paths, clear fallen leaves and maintain outdoor spaces. As a result, the besom broom became a wonderful example of practical craftsmanship using natural materials. Each broom was made by hand, often using locally available wood and brush, creating a tool that was both useful and long-lasting.

However, the story of the besom broom goes beyond the garden. It has also become closely linked with folklore, Halloween customs and traditional beliefs. For generations, people have shared stories of brooms being used in protective rituals.

Traditionally, a broom placed by the doorway or hearth was believed to help protect the home and ward off unwanted energies. Therefore, this workshop offers a wonderful opportunity to explore these fascinating stories while creating your own handmade broom to take home.

Create Your Own Traditional Besom Broom

During this full-day traditional broom-making workshop, local artist and crafter Heather McDermott will guide you through every stage of the process.

First, you will learn how to prepare your natural materials. You will then carve and whittle your own locally foraged birch or rowan shaft using traditional techniques.

Throughout the day, Heather will introduce you to the skills involved in broom making. This includes working with axes, whittling tools and fire techniques. In addition, you will finish your broom using natural materials such as birch brush, copper wire and a special handmade salve inspired by traditional protective customs.

A Seasonal Craft Experience

Set within the beautiful surroundings of The Walled Garden, Helen’s Bay, this is much more than a craft workshop. Instead, it is a chance to slow down, reconnect with traditional skills and enjoy a memorable autumn experience.

You will also have time to enjoy seasonal hospitality, meet like-minded people and create something unique with your own hands.

Whether you are a complete beginner or already enjoy working with natural materials, this Besom Broom Workshop is suitable for all abilities. Simply bring yourself, your curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

Finding The Walled Garden, Helen’s Bay

Helen’s Bay is easily accessed via the A2 Belfast/Bangor carriageway.

Drive along Craigdarragh Road for approximately 0.8 miles. You will see The Walled Garden on your left.

Turn left at the 30mph speed limit sign and continue down our temporary stoned driveway to the parking area.

From the car park, turn left and walk up the laneway. Old Mill House will be the first entrance on the right.
