SUSTAINABILITY
With over 130 years of history, the Walled Garden Helen’s Bay has many tales to tell!
It is rooted in care for this unique heritage landscape and a long-term commitment to its future. Every decision is made with attention, respect and a desire to keep the garden thriving, meaningful and connected.
Working with Nature
We follow the rhythm of the seasons, guided by organic and regenerative principles. Healthy soil, biodiversity and ecological balance are at the heart of what we do. We do not use artificial fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides, allowing the garden to flourish naturally.
Compost is made on site, returning nutrients to the soil, and we are developing rainwater harvesting to reduce reliance on mains supply. We are proud to be recognised as a conservation area for the native Irish honey bee supporting this species, alongside a rich network of pollinators and wildlife that call the garden home.
We work with what is already here. Storm damaged trees are repurposed, for woodland path edging and mulching, and naturally grown materials are foraged and used across the garden and in our workshops.
Reviving Traditional Crafts
Our workshops celebrate traditional crafts and natural materials. Willow grown on site and foraged foliage, seedheads and berries are used in weaving and seasonal making, reducing transport and keeping materials closely connected to the landscape.
Led by local makers, these experiences offer time to slow down, learn and create by hand, grounded in connection to people and place.
Thoughtful Experiences
Sustainability runs through everything we offer. From seasonal food using home grown and locally sourced ingredients, to workshops, tours and events, each experience is designed to keep our footprint light, and offer an authentic, unhurried connection to the garden and its surroundings.
Respecting Place, Heritage and People
The garden’s heritage is preserved through thoughtful restoration, using salvaged materials from the site or sourced locally. This reduces waste while retaining the character and history of the place.
Volunteers are central to the life of the garden, contributing time, knowledge and care, and helping to sustain a space of learning, creativity and connection.
Looking Ahead
Sustainability here is a continuing journey, shaped by everyday choices that support the landscape, its people and the wider community. While accreditations reflect progress, it is the quiet, consistent actions that matter most.
Through our membership of the ‘Loughs & Legends’ sustainable tourism cluster, we continue to learn, share and evolve alongside others who are committed to caring for place and practice.
At its heart, sustainability at the Walled Garden is an expression of care and responsibility, ensuring this living landscape continues to thrive as a place of nature, creativity, heritage and people.
